Ayurvedic Teachings - How to transition from Summer to Autumn

Victoria is a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and Holistic Health Coach who has personally helped me with my health. I'm so happy she's now part of the Wellness around the World platform. We have so many topics we could discuss, but to keep it relelvant we started with how to adjust to the change in seasons.

Why do we need to change our approach to health in each season

During each season we see drastic changes in our environment that have a huge impact in our bodies and our emotional state. It is incredibly helpful when we adjust our diet, lifestyle and mindset to each season so we can move with them and not against them.

What happens during the transition from summer to autumn?

In Ayurveda we talk everything having a quality, the qualities of summer are hot, sharp, oily and penetrating, in contrast the qualities of autumn are rough, light, cool and erratic. Our whole environment is going through change and movement, it is a time of transition and many  people can feel ungrounded by these qualities.

How can people prepare for autumn?

I think familiarising themselves with the qualities of autumn is a great start in order to understand how the change in our environment affects our bodies. Embracing the changes and taking it as an opportunity to connect with our bodies is also a great place to start.

How should people change their diet from summer to autumn?

Easiest way would be to go to your local farmer’s market and buy seasonal foods, as these foods will support your body into the new season. Another important tip is to prioritise cooked foods during autumn as we want to keep our bodies warm and nourished and avoid overly dry and cold foods as there is plenty of that with the weather already.

How should people change their lifestyle from summer to autumn?

A simple tip, which might sound a bit obvious but make sure to dress appropriately, with the weather changing very quickly it is important to use warm clothes and not to expose yourself to the cold for long periods of time.

Anything else to add about transitioning from one season to the next?

Each season brings a set of gifts and virtues and a set of challenges that are ultimately there to teach us something. Taking advantage of the virtues and learning from the challenges is a fantastic opportunity to grow.
