Breathwork

The practice of consciously controlling the breath to influence your mental, emotional or physical state

What is Breathwork?

Breathwork has been around for thousands of years and is a form of meditation that allows us to disconnect from the mind and be guided by our body and heart. For anyone who has practiced yoga you will understand the importance of controlling your breath. By taking conscious control of your breath you can use it as a vehicle to create a shift in your physiology and state of mind. There are so many benefits of breathwork, on your physical body, emotions and your mental health, but to get the most out of it you need to integrate a regular practice into your everyday life. People may be sceptical about breathwork, with it being such a seemingly simple thing, but there are so many studies that show deep breathing is one easy, accessible practice that can help balance the mind and reduce the stress response.

Why I love Breathwork

Breathing is something we all do every second of every day without even thinking about it, but how many of us are conscious of our breath? When you do start to become aware of it, how often do you notice that your breath is short, erratic, or even sometimes non-existent? This is a sign that we are not relaxed and are likely nervous or agitated. When our breath flows smoothly and calmly, this is also how we will feel. There are many different breathwork techniques, and each one has a unique purpose and effect on the body. But it also could just come down to what works for one person, might not work for another, so it’s about finding the technique that you feel comfortable with.
